Problems of Conservation and Restoration of Paintings
Surface problems are the first indication of more serious problems. They develop slowly but seem to appear overnight, often caused by poor conditions, neglect, improper storage or accidents.
A black light (ultraviolet) is often used to evaluate problems. Generally misunderstood, the black light only helps one recognize differences, areas that need closer inspection.
Surface cleaning is necessary for the continuous enjoyment of paintings. Although this is generally is not a frequent procedure - about every fifteen years in a normal home environment - it is important for the long-term health of the art.
Extreme damage is a tragedy. These problems are difficult and never treated without the possibility of additional damage or complete loss. It is critical to address these problems in a timely manner since long delays can make the correction even more difficult and increase the risks.
